CHAS is short for Contractors Health and Safety. This organisation started off as a Local Government department in the Merton constituancy and it's purpose was to check the credentials of contractors who wanted to work for that authority but due to the success of the system adopted many other 'buying' organisations have adopted the same system. To be accredited you need to have your Health and Safety audited yearly and to be a buyer organisations can register and gain access to the pre audited contractors. ACAD is part of The Thermal Insulation Contractors Association. It is the Asbestos Contractors Abatement Division. Their main role is the development of it's members within the specific industry. As well as a full range of training courses for the asbestos abatement industry they ensure it's members keep up to date with changes in legislation and they audit individual members to ensure they work to tight rules and regulations. Constructionline is much the same as CHAS but it deals with many more contractors all over the World. The entry levels are slightly more stringent than that of CHAS and if you are an accredited member of CHAS then as a supplier there is no need to do the Health and Safety part of constructionline registration. There are many more parts which go deeper into specialist trades but to use an organisation which has been previously granted membership is to know that a profesional organisation has checked the contractors cupboard for any skeletons.
